Over the past few day, the topic of women's equality has been all around me. And I want to go on the record with my personal opinion.

Men and women are different. We offer different and unique gifts and we are only equal in the fact that we are made in the image and likeness of God and therefore each deserve our inherent rights.  But men, you can't get pregnant. You can't breastfeed. We are different from you. And praise God for it.

I digress.

Here's the article that's really set me off. It's a summary of Archbishop Cardinal Justin Rigali's statement regarding the excommunication (for those of you that went to DC, he was one of the main speakers at the Shrine).

Also, check out the website of the women that sponsor these "ordinations". These women are crazy pants. If you read through even the first page, they misconstrue, contort, and twist all types of Church doctrines to try and prove their significance.  And straight from their website they have said, "Roman Catholic Womenpriests reject the penalty of excommunication issued by the Vatican Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith on May 29, 2008 stating that the "women priests and the bishops who ordain them would be excommunicated latae sententiae."

You can't reject an excommunication! And you can't do that and say that you follow the teachings of the Church. Seriously! This is just one simple proof that the logic of this group is completely flawed.

I stand with Archbishop Cardinal Rigali when he says, "Both (Scripture and Sacred Tradition) clearly indicate that Jesus called only men to follow Him as Apostles, and the Church has always regarded his choice in this matter as normative for all time. Therefore, she has always followed Jesus' example by choosing only men for the ministry of Holy Orders."

I always type "July" first, then have to go back and correct it to "Juli"! Haha.

Glad you could learn something, Kris! That's why I like to post Church related things. We should all be learning from each other. I totally had the same thoughts about the pictures of the women. They look silly. Did anyone else notice that their bread wasn't even the right kind? Geez, ladies!

I don't have anything intellectual to say nor do I have any better of an insight than y'all do, but I really enjoyed reading all of your comments because I have always wondered why it's a "Boys Only" kind of thing to be a priest. I never questioned the truth of it, just never exactly knew why, so thank you all for clearing it up! All of your opinions make perfect since in my head and in my heart of the Church's teachings. smilies/smiley.gif

I must say, it is disturbing to see that sight. And I can't even make myself come to think that these women are Catholic. It's almost as if I think they're Protestant, or that they were playing dress up for the photoshoot. lol Yes, it's kind of terrible, but it just doesn't make any sense to me! It seems a little too women's rightish for me. Like they may not even really want to be "Priests" or "Bishops", but instead just want to feel equal? Does that seem judgemental? haha Either way, that's just how I feel!

Anyways, thanks for the blog Abs, and Tony, July & Brian, thanks for convicting my heart and teaching me a lesson smilies/smiley.gif

Juli! Great debate with yourself there. I really like your converting point on the issue! I agree with you on being uncomfortable with the pictures. It's so weird and so very wrong. And I absolutely love that you brought up that Christ is the bridegroom of the Church. Amber always says that priest marry the Church (that's part of the reason the Church is a "she") and the Church is a very unfaithful bride. It's not an easy marriage by any means for a priest. And these women, by their actions, are denouncing the sacredness of this holy union that Christ sat out and St. Paul discusses in Ephesians. You are definitely not rambling. I wanted your insight!

And Tony, great point! That's one of my arguments for defending the sacredness and dignity of women. It's a powerful one, too.

In regards to what Brian said, he is right, we are different, but not greater than the other. I read in a book recently that being made in the image and likeness of Christ says a lot about us, but it says more about the person of God. Think about it. What are the characteristics we associate with men? Bravery, strength, confidence, a warrior, and many more. That's part of God. And what are the characteristics of women? Compassionate, loving, gentle, nurturing, relational, beautiful and other amazing qualities. Those are all a part of God. We all embody the best qualities of our Creator. And what a gift he has given us!

Good point Tony. As we each have different vocations including marriage, single life, or religious life. None is better than any other, it is just about where you are called to serve.

Jesus did defy the conventions of His time regarding women even though they weren't specifically called to be apostles. The fact that He first appeared risen to a woman was outside the norm. Women were thought of as 2nd class citizens whose opinions didn't matter much. For Jesus to appear first to a woman is therefore a pretty big statement on His part for the regard in which He holds women. Some people just don't understand that not being called to the priesthood doesn't make women less important; it just means they're called to serve in a different way.

No apology needed, that is really good that you came to that understanding. Women are so beautiful, and while men and women are not the same, it doesn't make one greater then the other. But I agree, we each have our different inherent ability's and gifts that God has given us. smilies/smiley.gif

Oh also! I must admit this was one of the harder parts of Catholicism to grasp for me. Even in high school I did a persuasive speech for a class on why women should be allowed to be ordained. Oh how wrong I was. Anyway, you spoke about the argument that Christ chose only men as His apostles. My response would always have been that in the culture of that time, Christ wouldn't have chosen women because it was male dominated and it would have been too taboo. Then someone finally told me, Please, you think Christ wasn't controversial. If He wanted to choose women, He would have. He did nothing by mistake, but by design. That's the argument that converted me. And how thrilled I was to learn about the dignity and true necessity of women in the Church! Sorry for rambling. smilies/smiley.gif

Wow, it really makes me uncomfortable looking at the pictures even.
I think it is so beautiful that Christ is the bridegroom of the Church.
In the vocation of the priesthood, and in the imitation of Christ priests are called to be married to the Church. Just in the fact that these women reject celibacy, they are completely false.
As a woman, this is offensive. By pursuing the priesthood, we are rejecting our innate presence and place in the Church.
